How it works

  1. You report

Choose what happened above and send us the link, a short description and your screenshots (no nude images, please). It takes a few minutes.

  2. A person reviews it

Reply usually within 2 working days

Stephan reads every report himself and decides what happens next. You'll usually hear from us within 2 working days – even if no law firm fits right now.

  3. You decide

If a partner law firm fits, we ask whether we may pass your report on. All you say is yes or no. If yes, the law firm contacts you. If you're under 16, we also need your parents' consent to pass your report on to a law firm.

Questions

Does it cost anything?

No. Reporting, review and referral are free for you.

Will the law firm cost me anything?

Review and referral are free. If you instruct a law firm, this can involve costs – the law firm discusses them with you first. Often the other side has to bear the costs, but that depends on the individual case.

Do I have to give my real name?

No, a pseudonym is fine. If you email us, we see your sender address. For some legal steps the law firm will need your real name later.

Will the person who attacked me find out?

Not from us. We don't contact the person who attacked you. They only find out if you decide to take legal steps, such as a cease-and-desist letter or a criminal complaint. In that case they will usually learn your name, too. The law firm discusses with you how to protect your address.

I'm under 18 – can I still report?

Yes, you can report at any age, and it's free. For some steps you'll need your parents, though: for minors, a request for prosecution (Strafantrag), for example for insult, is usually filed by them (Section 77 (3) of the German Criminal Code), and they usually instruct a law firm, too. If you're under 16, we also need your parents' consent to pass your report on to a law firm. You can also file a criminal complaint yourself. If it's about nude images of you or others: don't send them to us and don't forward them – go straight to the police or the Nummer gegen Kummer. It's best to talk to your parents or another adult you trust. You can talk anonymously to the Nummer gegen Kummer at any time: 116 111 (German-language).

Do I have to go to the police?

Not for a report here – it isn't a criminal complaint. Whether you go to the police is up to you. Important: for insult or defamation, a request for prosecution (Strafantrag) usually has to be filed within three months of learning of the offence and who did it. Don't wait for us – you can do it online via the online police station (Onlinewache). Make sure you explicitly file a request for prosecution (Strafantrag) there. In immediate danger, call 110.

Are there partner law firms yet?

Not yet – our network of partner law firms is still being built. Your report won't get lost: we review it, get back to you and pass it on as soon as a suitable law firm has joined and you agree. If you need help today, contact HateAid.
